Yellowstone fans never saw this storyline coming, and sadly they never will. A famous singer-songwriter said he was asked to play the long-lost Dutton brother, but because the show was canceled after Season 5, he was also canceled.
“I was so excited about it and so sad when it was canceled,” Cory Asbury told Taste of Country. “Too bad.”
GMA Award-winning singer Dove told Taste of Country that he got the gig, but then things went downhill.
– Part 5 Part B will be the final chapter of Yellowstone. It will start in November 2024.
– After Season 5 Part A ended in January, contract negotiations between Kevin Costner and Paramount reached an impasse.
– The Hollywood writers’ strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike pushed the film’s timeline back even further.
“I’m supposed to be Kayce’s long-lost brother,” Asbury told Dutton Rules podcast host Adison Haager during a live Q&A on Instagram. “We were planning to move to Montana within a year. We were ready… Anna (his wife) agreed with me and our kids said, ‘Okay, great, we’ll live in Montana .’”
He first admitted he was asked to be on the show during a fan Q&A on Instagram Story in July:
Asbury said that he was asked to meet with Luke Grimes and creator Taylor Sheridan, but the meeting never happened. Sheridan and Paramount have never shared plans or plot points about Season 5 Part B or Part 6. Asbury admitted that he was asked not to reveal this news, but since it was all for naught, he feel comfortable with it.
Plus, he wanted everyone to know that he was very close to being on Yellowstone, a show he was a huge fan of. Filming probably forced him to clear his schedule for nearly a year, but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make. Ryan Bingham did the same thing as Walker in Yellowstone.
During Season 5, Lainey Wilson appeared in several episodes. Her character, Abby, formed a relationship with a Dutton fighter named Ryan, but the end of Part A indicated that this particular romance had come to an end.
A new Dutton brother would mean that John and his wife put a child up for adoption at some point, or that John Dutton had a child with another woman (making this new character become half-brothers from another mother). There’s no scenario that’s hard to imagine for a show that constantly keeps viewers guessing.
